It began with my needing to keep track of the photographic sequences I was building.  I was still using color film then so I would send 3 or 4 rolls of film to a lab for processing and printing and when the first prints arrived I would send 3 or 4 more rolls and so on.  There were too many images to hold in sequence in my mind so I started making drawings.  The drawings were schematic showing the shapes and gestures in each photograph.  Each drawing was small, only about 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches.

I did this for more projects and the drawings got better and they were fun to make.  I drew with pencil and sometimes also colored pencils.  At some point I thought to make the little images with gouache.  I loved making the small gouache paintings.  Making these images was a way for me to internalize the information in the photographs.  And the little gouache paintings reminded me how much I like to paint.
