Looking I + II

Looking II
These books are of the last of the movies my son made that I photographed in process. The movie was a large project, feature length, more complex than anything he’d done before. He directed it but someone else worked the camera.
Seeing the books now, it’s interesting that my images are almost all “behind the camera.” I was looking at the woman who ran the camera and my son Julian and the woman who was his assistant director. I shot almost none of the action of the movie itself. What I focused on was Julian and the camerawoman and the assistant director as they watched and responded to the action.
A funny story with a sad ending: Julian asked his father, Frank, to act in the movie. Frank grew an odd little mustache for the part and got an ugly tie to wear with a short sleeved sport shirt. He wore a (fake) gun and holster as well. He was playing a detective.
The space in which they were shooting his scene was Julian’s very small first floor store front apartment. When Frank was not in the scene he had to wait outside. Next door was a pet shop with a meth lab upstairs. When the neighbor saw Frank she complained to Julian that detective Frank with his gun holster was discouraging her customers.
The sad ending: Detective Frank ended up on the cutting room floor.
