When I first got a small digital camera, I took it to museums and galleries. Sometimes the images I made were direct representations of the art but often they were not. The spaces in museums interested me, sometimes the architecture, sometimes the spaces between pieces of art. Occasionally the people interrupting a view of the art became part of the image.
I did this for years without a clear plan for these pictures.

Towards the end of the time I was working with the Proximity photographs I found myself arranging groups of the images into grids. The grid functioned for me as a way of composing and of creating relationships between the photographs.
I don’t remember quite how or why I began looking at my museum photographs after completing the Proximity series, but my interest in what I could do with the grid must have had something to do with it.
When I built the first book for the Ekphrasis grids I realized these books would have to be bigger than any I’d made before. They are each a serious 15 x 18 inches.
The title: Ekphrasis is a word usually used for poetry that creates a word picture to describe a painted picture or some other form of art. The poem becomes a metaphor for the art it describes. I’ve named these books Ekphrasis because they are meant as a metaphor for the experience of being with art.
