Drawings and Shadows
I made two books of curator, Ingrid Schaffner installing exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Philadelphia. Looking at them now, years later, I notice that in this first book Ingrid is always at a distance from the camera. Perhaps I hesitated to intrude, danced around the edges of the action. Or perhaps I was simply responding to the delicate architecture of the exhibit.
The subject of the exhibition was the work of Anne Tyng. Tyng, an architect, was a collaborator with Lou Kahn and an influence on his thinking. The exhibition included several of her lovely intricate drawings. In the central spaces were wooden models as delicate and lace-like as the drawings. While I wasn’t able to catch clear images of the drawings, I was able to capture glimpses of the models and many of the magical shadows thrown by her constructions.
The photographs for Drawings and Shadows were made with a 35 mm camera.
Drawings and Shadows made in an edition of 2. 8 x 12.5 inches. Seven archival ink jet prints mounted on stonehenge paper, museum board ends, bound with stonehenge jacket. 2013.
