Sara Book I

Sara sat for drawings once a week for three years.  SaraH (referred to as Sara with an H) sat for me for about two years.  I don’t want to draw someone who I don’t want to spend that kind of time with.

Sara was pointed out to me as a possible person to draw.  Seeing her only briefly I couldn’t tell.  But we gave it a try.  Sara was quiet.  She could sit for long stretches apparently engaged enough with her own thoughts that she didn’t tire.  We talked sometimes, sometimes while I drew, sometimes at breaks.  I got to know her through the conversations but more through watching the abiding calm and charm of her face.

SaraH One Page Book

SaraH (with an H) and I met via a phone conversation.  She was looking for studio space but the talk ranged past that on to all sorts of things.  SaraH has a very lively intelligence.  Not very long after our phone call I met her in person and knew I wanted to draw her.

SaraH could hardly have been more different from Sara.  She was restless, couldn’t always keep to a pose and her sittings were shorter.  Not a perfect model.  But I didn’t want a perfect model.  I liked being with SaraH and I really liked drawing SaraH, not least because of her beautiful, long fingered hands.

Why all that time drawing the same person?  Why do I want to get to know the people I draw? I think my eye can only see as much as my mind knows.
