A Walk In Maine I, II and III
A Walk In Maine
One summer we spent two weeks in a house in Maine. It had been renovated and restored with unusual skill and sensitivity by an artist friend. I spent most of those weeks making photographs of the house. Not the whole house or even whole rooms, but details.
Doors and doorways, stairways, floorboards as they joined at odd angles, lots of junctures. Most of the photographs were abstract though the objects which formed the abstract shapes were recognizable — they were the passages through the doorways, along the halls and up and down the stairs.
After the summer I made a book of several of the photographs and called it A Walk in Maine.

And then I made a second book, A Walk in Maine II. This book has six images and is more abstract. The elements in these photographs reveal themselves more slowly. Or not at all.. It is one of my favorite books.
While I was looking at the books to put together this post, I felt the first book needed some revision. I moved images, changed their places in the sequences, discarded a few and made A Walk in Maine I into two separate books — A Walk in Maine I and A Walk in Maine III.

A Walk in Maine II was made in 2014. A Walk in Maine I, originally made in 2013, was revised and became both A Walk in Maine I and III in 2024.
