Choreographer

My niece Amelia is a choreographer.  She was a dancer and also a rock climber and somewhere along the line those two ways of moving merged for her and she invented Bandaloop.  

Bandaloop is her aerial dance troupe who perform off the sides of mountains and big buildings.  They wear harnesses attached to the mountain or building by long ropes so they can move freely and dance through the air.  It’s lovely to see and literally breathtaking.

When Bandaloop performs on a stage they erect a vertical trampoline with the ropes attached at the top.  Then they move through the air bouncing off the trampoline wall.

A graduate of Swarthmore College, Amelia returned there in 2003 on a Cooper Grant to teach and give a performance with her troupe.  I photographed them during rehearsal as they were experimenting with lighting and with projections on the trampoline.

The book was a long time coming.  I was using a film camera and had the film developed and proofs made in a lab.  I wasn’t happy with the result and put them aside.  Years later, when I was printing digitally, I tried again.  It was ten years later but by doing my own color correction and printing I was able to make the photographs work as a book.
