Pages of poetry, even book length manuscripts, don’t seem to me to be complete works.  That feeling was, in part, what moved me to make Cakes And Emily, a long epistolary poem, into a book.  Designing the text for Cakes And Emily and building the book was work I really liked doing.  It made me think about making more books of my poems..

I had a longer manuscript, a sequence of poems, that I had been discussing with a friend for some time.  I made it into a book, two copies, one for the friend and one to keep.  Over time my manuscripts increased in number, some full length, some chapbook length.  I have gradually made each of these into a book.

The books of my poetry sit on a shelf in the studio along with all the other books I’ve made.  Bound and completed, each an object with its own existence.

The exception is A Conversation, which is sewn-bound, made in 2014. The others are made in 2017 and 2018. More about Cakes and Emily.
