Drawings of My Father Dying
Drawings of My Father Dying is a book described by its title. I made the drawings of my father in response to the sadness and helplessness that I felt watching his daily diminishment. Drawing him helped me to make some sense of what I was seeing and in the year after his death, making the book became a tangible way of addressing my grief.
In the book, each image is on the right page of a spread and faced with a silent unmarked page on the left. After two or three drawings, a page with a single line -- a date -- punctuates the flow of images creating context and allowing a further pause for the viewer to absorb the intention of the sequence, which is a progression of silences towards death.
Drawings of my Father Dying made in an edition of 50. 5 x 7.25 inches. Twelve archival inkjet prints on arches paper bound in mylar cover. 2008.
