Drawing Books: Light Eyes

I need a hook, some shape that starts a drawing for me.  Sometimes it’s an ear or the curve of a cheek. Often it’s the hair, the way it describes the shape of or ornaments a head.  With Ariela it was her hair..  It was thick and wavy and seemed to do whatever it wanted to.  That seemed to be alright with her as it looked good whatever it did.

I always thought that she was an interesting looking person but I hadn’t much noticed Ariela’s hands until I started to draw her.  When we first met she was a painter but in the year I was drawing her she had begun to work with ceramics.  That seemed a fit if you looked at her wonderful big potters hands.

Light Eyes is a unique book. 12.5 x 12.5 inches. Eleven drawings with brush and sumi ink and gouache on Bristol paper mounted in Stonehenge paper book with Stonehenge paper cover. 2013.
